Air Force, Western Michigan Advance in Vegas

Union 7, St. Cloud State 2

Union advanced to the final of the Three Rivers Classic on Friday. It’s a nice accomplishment. Trophies are always good.

Most importantly, though, the Dutchmen picked up a massive win over St. Cloud State, 7-2, at PPG Paints Arena. The win moved Union to 13th in the Pairwise at the end of Friday’s action.

SCSU outshot Union, 38-25, in the game. However, the Dutchmen and the Huskies played an even game until Union started building its lead.

Ryan Walker and Brandon Estes scored in the first period to give Union a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes. Parker’s Foo’s fourth of the year made it 3-0 at 11:14 of the second.

Despite a surge in shots from St. Cloud State, Union kept on scoring and ended the second period with a 4-1 lead. Third-period goals from Estes, Walker and Brett Supinski sealed the for the Dutchmen.

They’ll play Brown on Saturday for the tournament’s championship. St. Cloud State will take on Robert Morris.

Brown 7, Robert Morris 4

Wild second and third periods helped Brown defeat Robert Morris, 7-4, in the Three Rivers Classic on Friday.

The Bears will take on ECAC foe Union on Saturday for the tournament’s championship.

Robert Morris led, 2-0, after 20 minutes and outshot Brown 15-4 in the opening period.

Then it all changed.

Brown outshot RMU, 34-11, in the final 40 minutes. The Bears outscored the Colonials, 7-2.

Just 28 seconds into the second period, Joachim Weberg scored for Brown. By 7:06, the Bears were in the lead. The teams traded goals for the rest of the game, but Brown could never eliminate the deficit.

Colin Burston’s goal at 17:36 of the third period made it 6-4 just 45 seconds after Eric Israel pulled the Colonials back within one.

Ice Vegas Invitational

Air Force 7, St. Lawrence 1

Air Force advanced to the championship game of the Ice Vegas Invitational with a 7-1 win over St. Lawrence on Friday.

Evan Giesler scored two goals and two assists for the Falcons. Evan Feno finished with one goal and three assists.

Billy Christopoulos made 17 saves to earn the shutout and win for Air Force.

They will play Western Michigan on Saturday.

Western Michigan 5, UConn 1

Western Michigan defeated Connecticut, 5-1, in the first game of the Ice Vegas Invitational at T-Mobile Arena.

The Broncos advance to the final of the tournament on Saturday. They’ll play Air Force for the tournament championship.

WMU took the lead in the first period on goals from Cam Lee and Josh Passolt. WMU and UConn traded goals in the second before two Western goals in the third put UConn away for good.

The Huskies have lost of their last nine games. They’ll play St. Lawrence in the tournament’s consolation game on Saturday.


Lake Superior State defeated Alaska-Anchorage, 5-2, Friday. Nick Kossoff made 29 saves to earn the win for the upstart Lakers. … Northern Michigan cruised past Alaska, 4-0, on Friday. Joseph Nardi, Ty Readman, Troy Loggins and Grant Loven both scored for the Wildcats.
